Shallow‐marine carbonate cementation in Holocene segments of the calcifying green alga Halimeda

چکیده

Early-diagenetic cementation of tropical carbonates results from the combination numerous physico-chemical and biological processes. In marine phreatic environment it represents an essential mechanism for development stabilization carbonate platforms. However, diagenetic cements that developed early in are likely to become obliterated during later stages meteoric or burial diagenesis. When lithified sediment samples studied, this complicates recognition processes involved cementation, their geological implications. contribution, a petrographic microfacies analysis Holocene Halimeda segments collected on coral island Spermonde Archipelago, Indonesia, is presented. Through electron microscopical analyses polished samples, study shows characterized by intragranular fibrous aragonite, equant High-Mg calcite (3.9 7.2 Mol% Mg), bladed Low-Mg (0.4 1.0 Mg) mini-micritic (3.2 3.3 Mg). The co-existence consecutive aragonite initially flow oversaturated seawater along template skeleton, followed adjustment cement mineralogy towards as result reduced permeability fluid rates pores. Growth top etched substrates explained shifts pore water pH alkalinity through microbial sulphate reduction. Microbial activity appears be main trigger precipitation well, based presumable detection extracellular polymeric matrix stage mini-micrite precipitation. Radiocarbon five furthermore indicate virtually complete with thermodynamically/kinetically controlled takes place about 100 years. Collectively, early-diagenetic highly diverse provides new quantitative constraints rate factories.

Rapid Mass Movement of Chloroplasts during Segment Formation of the Calcifying Siphonalean Green Alga, Halimeda macroloba

BACKGROUND The calcifying siphonalean green alga, Halimeda macroloba is abundant on coral reefs and is important in the production of calcium carbonate sediments. The process by which new green segments are formed over-night is revealed here for the first time. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS Growth of new segments was visualised by epifluorescence and confocal microscopy and by pulse amplitud...

Experiments in Calcium Carbonate Cementation

Carbonate sediments may be cemented by a variety of forms of aragonite. calcite. or dolomite. The mineralogy of the cement has been regarded by most investigators as the product of the physico-chemical environment within the sediment at the time of cementation. This has been a reasonable working hypothesis until it was recently demonstrated that many different kinds of cement may occur in beach...

Phototaxis and aerotaxis in a calcifying alga.

The coccolithophore, Pleurochrysis carterae, is a unicellular marine alga, with an outer covering of scales known as coccoliths, instead of a cell wall (Figure 1; 1). Coccoliths are composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in the form of calcite, and are formed intracellularly in the Golgi cisternae in a very precise and well defined process before being positioned outside the cell membrane (1). B...
